PMI Success Profile: Margaret Thatcher
From time to time, PMI highlights the accomplishments of successful individuals who embody the elements of true leadership. This post is dedicated to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Born in the fall of 1925, Margaret Hilda Roberts spent her childhood in the town of Grantham. Her father was active in politics, which set the stage for Margaret’s eventual pursuit of politics. After primary school, Margaret attended Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School on scholarship. Upon finishing school, she won a new scholarship to begin studies at Oxford. In 1950, she received her Master of Arts degree.
After graduation, Margaret got a job as a research chemist for BX Plastics. It was during this time that she joined the Conservative Association and began her ascent into politics. Margaret served in multiple capacities with the Conservative Party and was known for her integrity and blunt speech. It was this honest directness that helped her make a name for herself, which propelled her to her position as Prime Minister.
Margaret was a true pioneer for women around the world. She proved to her doubters that women are capable leaders who can make difficult decisions. With the Cold War and other global intrigue roiling around her, she helped her country navigate a tumultuous period of its history. In October of 1984, she survived a tragic bombing that took place at the Brighton Hotel. The IRA had carried out the brutal attack, which left five people dead and many others wounded. The next morning, Margaret insisted that the Conservative Party Conference proceed as planned. She bravely delivered her prepared speech and set an impressive example of standing up in the face of tyranny.
[...] Margaret Thatcher was an excellent example of this idea. She refused to accept the societal ideas about what women were capable of. Not only did she reach the esteemed position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but she went out of her way to help others and be a voice for the disenfranchised. Her life is a stellar example of what is capable when you believe in your innate ability. This entry was posted in Quotes and tagged making a difference, margaret thatcher, stevie wonder.
